Baroness Nicholson has criticised Stonewall’s new school and college awards scheme, highlighting “the litany of inconsistencies and incompatibilities between Stonewall’s philosophy for ‘supporting LGBT children'” and the DfE’s current guidance.
In a letter to the Education Secretary, Gavin Williamson MP, and the Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss MP, dated 18 January, she wrote:
…[Stonewall] reinterpret provisions of the Equality Act 2010 as if the protected characteristic of ‘gender reassignment’ were actually ‘gender identity’ – something Parliament chose explicitly not to permit…
I believe that you will wish to instruct Stonewall, who act as Education Department most senior advisers and are paid by a large number of government departments and institutions to follow the laws and official guidelines; rather than to market materials for schools which directly contravene these.
Indeed, it is surely astonishing to learn that this proposal has slipped through the undoubtedly strong net of Child Protection that our government has firmly put in place.
